On July 30, the World Day Against Human Trafficking, Dignita Foundation once again joins global efforts to end child trafficking and issues a strong call for urgent action to protect children.

Why It Matters

  • One in three victims of human trafficking worldwide is a child.
  • Children are increasingly vulnerable to trafficking due to overlapping crises such as armed conflicts, pandemics, economic hardship, and environmental challenges.
  • Lack of adequate safety measures on online platforms poses additional risks for children.
  • Traffickers use online platforms, social media, and the dark web to recruit and exploit children, leveraging technology to evade detection, reach a broader audience, and distribute exploitative content.

The Situation in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, statistics show that in 2023, 13.5% of formally identified human trafficking victims were children. The causes of child trafficking and the methods used for exploitation are numerous and varied. Combating this issue requires a joint approach from civil society, the private sector, and communities, which play a crucial role in raising awareness, providing support services, and advocating for policy reform.
