Prevention of trafficking in human beings. Advocacy and support to victims.
Trafficking in human beings
Trafficking in human beings is a severe human rights violation and a modern form of slavery.
It affects women, men and children, who due to different vulnerabilities become subject of exploitation.
The crime generates huge profits for the perpetrators and leaves long lasting detrimental effects to victims: health problems, social-economic exclusion and isolation.
According to the International Labour Organisation, more than 2 million people globally are in situation of modern slavery.
The registered victims in the European Union are more than 20 000, though a large part of the human trafficking victims remain outside of the official statistics.
A comprehensive approach, based on prevention measures, actions to investigate and prosecute traffickers while providing protection and support to victims, is the only effective strategy to eradicate the problem.
A prerequisite for combatting trafficking in human beings is the cooperation between different stakeholders, including public bodies, civil society, academia, business and media, together with the existence of effective public policies and monitoring mechanisms.
